Norman Arts Council Announces Winners of First Round of Artist Grants

Norman Arts Council is pleased to announce the first round of Norman Artist Grants award winners: Lacy Jo Burgess-Cady (creative project), Rai Fordyce (creative project) & Leticia Galizzi (education opportunity).

Lacy Jo Burgess-Cady is an artist from Norman, working mainly in mixed media and fiber art. She earned her BFA in Art History from the University of Oklahoma in 2003. She has taught in the Children’s Programs and Outreach at the Firehouse Art Center for over a decade.

Burgess-Cady will use funds from the grant award to create an installation that celebrates the Monarch Migration — incorporating multi-media fiber techniques to celebrate the inspiring natural phenomena. This sculpture and the experience of seeing the migration from the point of view of the butterfly are intended to elicit empathy with the struggles faced by nature in an increasingly fragmented and urban environment. Burgess-Cady plans to display the piece in an open community space for all to enjoy.

Rai Fordyce is a multifaceted artist, community organizer, and business owner based in Norman. As a single mother, Rai is deeply committed to building community and fostering connections among her fellow residents. She is known for her work facilitating clothing swaps and social meetups, which have become popular gathering places for people of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to her community organizing work, Rai is also a talented textile artist. She runs her own business Sun Textiles & Wares, where she creates and sells a wide variety of handcrafted textiles, chainmail, and resin pieces.

With the grant award, Fordyce will create a clothing collection for a fashion show that promotes attainable, sustainable, hand-made fashion by local artists as an ethical alternative to what’s known as fast fashion. The financial support allows Fordyce to purchase quality fabric, tools, patterns and ethically produce a fashion show utilizing other Norman artists, creatives and local businesses.

Leticia Galizzi is an artist and educator based in Norman, OK. She holds an MFA in Painting from the University of Oklahoma’s School of Visual Arts having studied at Yale School of Art before that. She has shown her paintings, woodblock carving and printing widely; recent venues include MAINSITE Contemporary Art, Pictor Gallery in NYC and Resonator Institute.

With the grant award, Galizzi will travel to her native Brazil, specifically the state of Minas Gerais. She is visiting to reconnect with the local art and techniques, which was made inaccessible and mired in mystery to many by both geography and reasons related to colonization, gold and mineral resources. She will also study with Marco Elizio de Paiva, a well-known local historian specializing in Colonial Brazilian art, pre-Colombian art in the Americas, Baroque, Russian and Islamic art.

This is the first round of Artist Grants awarded by Norman Arts Council with plans to offer more in the months, supporting our local artists in growing their craft and sharing it with the community and regions beyond.

The City of Norman operates and maintains a series of underground pipes, open channels, ditches, and roadways used to collect or convey stormwater runoff from our homes and businesses to the nearest body of water, such as a creek, stream, or lake. In urban areas, stormwater runoff from hard surfaces, like roofs and driveways, flows along the side of the road until it reaches a storm drain, which is an opening or grate in the curb connected by pipes to the nearest waterbody.  Water and other materials that enter these storm drains are transported directly to our creeks and streams without any treatment.  Some of the pollutants that enter our local creeks and streams with stormwater runoff include grass clippings, oil, trash, fertilizers, pesticides, and pet waste.

For the 5th Annual Artful Inlets program, the Norman Arts Council, Public Arts Board, and City of Norman are inviting artists to submit designs that will transform city storm infrastructure into works of public art. These artful inlets will educate and raise awareness that pollutants that go down storm drains have a devasting impact on our local water quality.

There are currently 14 Artful Inlets in the community in the Walker Arts District and Lion’s Park. This year we will be adding an additional five (5) drains identified for this project. They will all be in Colonial Estates Park in the area of 12th Ave and East Lindsey Street.

Colonial Estates Park is in a historic site in Norman, nearby was the original camp of Abner Norman. Additionally, a tributary of Bishops Creek runs through the park, which is the actually connection to the City’s Stormwater system. Selected artwork will have a stormwater and/or water quality theme, incorporating the slogan “Make Pollution History!”, as a nod to the history of the site. Designs must be adaptable to any of the five specified sites in the park. Each selected artist will incorporate their original design into the prescribed area around the storm drain. Designs may also include the hashtag, “#cleancreekgeeks”

Artists must be 18 years or older and residents of Cleveland County, Oklahoma. All designs must be original and submitted no later than Friday, March 3, 2023. Murals will be installed on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 (with Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16 as rain days in case of inclement weather). Selected artists will be notified on Friday, March 10, 2023.

A Mayor’s walking tour celebrating the Artful Inlets will be announced at a later date.

Selected artists will receive a $750 stipend, as well as all paint needed to complete their original design.

Firehouse Art Center Opens 2023 Healing Studio Exhibition

The Firehouse Gallery will host the 2023 Healing Studio Exhibition from January 13 – February 3, 2023. This annual exhibition highlights the creativity and self-expression of participants of the Firehouse Art Center’s weekly Healing Studio program. The Firehouse invites the Norman community to join us in celebrating these individuals during a closing reception on February 3, from 6 – 8 PM.

The Healing Studio program provides an outlet for the creative expressions of individuals with varying degrees of cognitive, physical, and learning challenges. The program’s weekly sessions are conducted in a positive, supportive atmosphere with projects that help students link visual art expression to their personal experiences in a way that is communicative, healing, and confidence building.

The exhibition supports the artistic endeavors of these individuals, while providing gallery attendees with insight into the Healing Studio program. Artworks in the show are inspired by master artists who were explored during the program over the past year, including Beatriz Milhazes, Gustav Klimt, and Vincent Van Gogh. Healing Studio classes are taught by Firehouse faculty member Jane Lawson, who has taught at the Firehouse for over 10 years.

The Firehouse Art Center is funded in part by select grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, Allied Arts, and the City of Norman, as well as corporate sponsorship from Armstrong Bank, First United Bank, and Fowler Automotive. The Firehouse’s programming would not be possible without the support of individual donors and memberships.
